The Russian government attempted to assassinate a vocal anti-corruption politician.
The Department of the Treasury recently imposed sanctions on four Russian individuals for their involvement in the poisoning of Russian politician Aleksey Navalny. These four Russians are believed to have worked on behalf of the Russian government, surveilling Navalny’s movements before covertly breaking into his hotel to sprinkle a deadly nerve agent on his belongings.
On August 20, 2020, Navalny, who is known mainly for his anti-corruption efforts and open criticism of the current Russian government, was flying back to Russia when he was found to have been poisoned by the nerve agent Novichok, a chemical weapon with strong ties to the Russian government. Though he recovered, he was later imprisoned by Russia in 2021 for “extremism”.
“The assassination attempt against Aleksey Navalny in 2020 represents the Kremlin’s contempt for human rights, and we will continue to use the authorities at our disposal to hold the Kremlin’s willing would-be executioners to account,” said Under Secretary Brian Nelson.
As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…
- For Under Secretary Nelson as he heads the Office of Intelligence and Terrorism in the Treasury Department.
- For Secretary Janet Yellen to seek God’s direction as she oversees her department.
